Nollywood actor and producer Yul Edochie has sparked fresh conversation about marriage traditions after advising African men against kneeling during marriage proposals. The father of seven shared the message directly on his Facebook page, describing the act as an imported Western custom that does not align with African values.

In the post, Yul Edochie wrote plainly:

“Dear African man, never kneel to propose marriage to a woman. That’s a very foolish Oyibo culture. Stand proudly like a true African man who knows his worth and propose to her. Women adore men who know their value.”

He framed the advice around self-worth and cultural pride, urging men to approach proposals with confidence rather than gestures he considers foreign and unnecessary. The statement echoes similar views long held by his father, veteran actor Pete Edochie, who has also publicly discouraged kneeling during proposals.

Yul’s message adds to his ongoing commentary on relationships and gender roles. He has previously shared tips on wooing women, stressing confidence over wealth, and has spoken openly about marriage as a beautiful institution while cautioning against desperation or harmful actions in failing unions.

The post has already begun generating reactions online, with many weighing in on whether kneeling represents romance or a departure from African tradition. Supporters see it as a call for cultural authenticity, while others view it as outdated or overly rigid in modern relationships.

For Yul Edochie the latest advice reinforces his belief that true value of an African man lies in knowing and standing in his worth.
