Nollywood actor and director Aremu Afolayan has issued a heartfelt public apology after facing intense criticism for his recent comments defending President Bola Tinubu and suggesting that reports of insecurity in Nigeria are exaggerated or “scripted.” Afolayan knelt before the camera and directly addressed Nigerians, expressing deep remorse and announcing his complete withdrawal from political discussions.
Speaking with visible sobriety, Afolayan said:
“To all Nigerians, please forgive me. I’m very sorry. The curses you guys are raining on me is too much. I didn’t take money from anyone.”
He went on to clarify his earlier stance:
“It’s obvious that there’s insecurity and the government isn’t doing anything; what I was trying to say is don’t answer anyone who is saying there’s no insecurity.”
He then shared a personal example:
“I shouldn’t be saying this but my best friend’s mother was kidnapped and we paid ransom; how would I say there’s no insecurity?”
The actor addwd that he’ll be stepping back entirely to stand with his people:
“I’m withdrawing myself from anything that has to do with politics.”
This apology serves as a direct sequel to Afolayan’s earlier viral statement where he strongly supported Tinubu, accusing critics of focusing too much on negativity while ignoring progress.
That statement drew widespread backlash, with many accusing him of being paid (which he also refuted in his apology) and out of touch with the realities of banditry, kidnapping, and economic hardship facing ordinary citizens.
Afolayan’s latest video has elicited a range of reactions. Some users accepted the apology while others remained sceptical, suggesting it may be damage control.
The development highlights the precarious position celebrities find themselves in when commenting on Nigerian politics. Afolayan, known for his roles in films and his direct connection to director Kunle Afolayan, had positioned himself as a vocal supporter of the current administration. His decision to withdraw highlights the overwhelming pressure he was under.
