I Smoke First Before Going On Stage — Rema Says

Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema has revealed the personal routine he follows before stepping on stage, and it includes a mix of reflection, preparation, and indulgence.

Speaking in an interview with Dazed on the sidelines of Milan Fashion Week, where he walked the runway for Diesel, the global hitmaker opened up about how he mentally and physically prepares for live performances.

According to him, his ritual blends relaxation, focus, and spiritual grounding.

“A little Tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” he said when asked about his pre-show routine.

The singer explained that performing live requires intense physical and mental control, describing it as far more demanding than modelling on the runway.

“Performing has a lot to do with your breathwork and you have to keep the crowd going,” he noted.

Beyond performance preparation, Rema also shared what has been shaping his current musical inspiration. The artist revealed he has been deeply drawn to Sudanese cultural live music, reflecting his growing interest in global sonic influences.

Despite the glamour surrounding his career, the Afrobeats star admitted he has personal habits he is not proud of, openly acknowledging smoking as his “biggest vice.”

The candid revelation has sparked conversations among fans, offering a rare glimpse into the mindset and preparation behind one of Africa’s most electrifying live performers.
