Nollywood actress Uche Jombo has addressed growing criticism surrounding romantic and kissing scenes in Nigerian films, making it clear that what viewers see on screen is far from the reality behind the camera.
Her comments come shortly after actress Bolaji Ogunmola faced heavy backlash over repeated kissing scenes in her movies, sparking fresh debate about romance in Nollywood productions.
Taking to her Twitter page, Uche Jombo set the record straight about what really happens during filming.
“Love scenes in films are not fun to film…Not the way you guys think.I know this job is okay, but let’s not play with the job.”
Her statement quickly triggered mixed reactions online. While some supported her honesty, others questioned whether actors truly dislike filming such scenes. Critics also argued about cultural values, marriage, and the role of intimacy in storytelling.
The debate reflects a long-running conversation in Nollywood about artistic expression, audience expectations, and personal boundaries.
In recent years, several actors have faced scrutiny over on-screen intimacy. Actress Chizzy Alichi drew criticism after sharing a video of herself kissing a man on a movie set. Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo also sparked reactions after posting a romantic movie photo with Omoni Oboli.
Religious leaders and cultural commentators have also weighed in. Evangelist Mike Bamiloye previously criticised actors for promoting nudity and romance in films, describing it as a misuse of talent meant for spiritual purpose.
But many actors insist that storytelling sometimes demands realism. Actress Ini Edo once explained that certain themes, including crime-based narratives cannot be portrayed convincingly without intense or sensitive scenes.
Uche Jombo’s latest remarks now add a new layer to the conversation, reminding audiences that acting is work, not pleasure, even when the scenes appear romantic.
