Court Remands Angela Okorie Over Defamation Case

An Abuja court has remanded Nollywood actress Angela Okorie in Suleja prison following a defamation case linked to her long-running dispute with fellow actress Mercy Johnson.

The development comes shortly after Okorie’s reported arrest by the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Centre in Abuja. She was picked up at her residence in Lagos and transferred to the Federal Capital Territory for further legal proceedings.

Film industry insider Seun Oloketuyi shared the update on Instagram, writing:

“Breaking — Court remands Angela Okorie in Suleja Prison until adjourned date when bail will be discussed.”

The court decision means the actress will remain in custody until the next hearing date, when her bail application is expected to be considered.

The case is believed to be connected to a petition allegedly filed by Mercy Johnson over repeated online attacks and claims made against her. Reports last year suggested that the petition stemmed from what were described as unverified and damaging accusations shared on social media.

Angela Okorie had previously denied being arrested in relation to the matter. In an earlier Instagram Live session, she stated that she was only invited for questioning and had honoured the invitation voluntarily.

For years, the actress has publicly criticised Mercy Johnson over undisclosed personal grievances, often making strong allegations during social media broadcasts. The dispute has repeatedly drawn reactions from other Nollywood figures and stirred debate among fans.

With the court now stepping in, attention has shifted from social media drama to legal proceedings, as the actress prepares to seek bail in the coming days.
