Wizkid and Asake Share Stories Behind MMS Hit

Afrobeats heavyweights Wizkid and Asake have opened up on the emotional story behind their hit collaboration “MMS”, offering fans a rare glimpse into how genuine connection, respect, and shared pain shaped the song.

The duo spoke during Thursday’s episode of the Close Friends Only Instagram podcast, now streaming on YouTube, where Asake revealed that the record came from a deeply personal place while working on his August album Lungu Boy.

According to Asake, the song was created alongside producer P.Priime, but even before it was completed, one name kept coming to his mind.

“Anytime I’m with P.Priime, I tell him how I wish Wizkid was on this song because he’s the only one that can really relate to the pain,” Asake said.

That wish turned into reality faster than expected.

Asake disclosed that he didn’t even know Wizkid had recorded a verse on the track until the moment he heard it in the studio.

“P.Priime called me and said, ‘Come to the studio. Wiz wants to see you.’ We were vibing and having fun, then they played the verse for me. That was the first time we had an intimate conversation, and we’ve been friends since then.”

Wizkid, on his part, said he connected instantly with the record the first time he heard it, praising Asake’s originality and emotional depth.

The two artists also reflected on why their collaborations keep working, especially in an industry where many joint efforts fail to connect.

“With the amount of successful collaborations we’ve had, you have to put that successful,” Wizkid said, before Asake quickly added, “Some people collab and it collapse.”

Beyond music, the conversation highlighted the strong mutual respect between both stars. Asake described Wizkid as a once-in-a-generation artist, saying:

“Wizkid will always be Wizkid till life ends. Nobody will ever be like Wiz, he’s so authentic.”

Wizkid returned the love by affirming that Asake’s sound is impossible to replicate, noting that no one else sounds like him.

The duo also teased a potential joint project titled REAL (Vol. 1), hinting that their creative chemistry may extend beyond singles.

During the podcast’s Speed Round segment, both artistes shared personal insights. Asake named God, family, and peace of mind as the three most important things in his life, while Wizkid chose his daughter, music, and God.

When asked to share something fans may not know about him, Wizkid smiled and replied:

“I see myself as boring.”

The episode offered fans more than just music talk, it revealed two superstars grounded in authenticity, friendship, and purpose, proving once again that when respect meets talent, Afrobeats history is made.
