Nigerian music continues its steady rise on the global stage as former United States President Barack Obama names songs by Olamide, Asake and Burna Boy among his favourite tracks of 2025.
Obama unveiled the playlist on his official X page, maintaining his annual tradition of sharing his favourite books, movies and music as the year draws to a close.
“As 2025 comes to a close, I’m continuing a tradition that I started during my time in the White House: sharing my annual lists of favourite books, movies, and music,” Obama wrote. “I hope you find something new to enjoy and please send any recommendations for me to check out.”
One of the standout Nigerian selections on the list is ‘99’ by Olamide, a star-studded collaboration featuring Asake, Seyi Vibez, Young Jonn and British singer Daecolm. The song was released in June as one of the lead singles from Olamide’s forthcoming album and quickly gained attention for its blend of street energy and mainstream appeal.
Also making the list is Burna Boy’s ‘TaTaTa’, a collaboration with American rapper Travis Scott, which appeared earlier in the year as part of Burna Boy’s latest body of work.
Further extending Nigeria’s presence on the playlist is Obongjayar, the Nigerian-born, UK-based singer, whose inclusion highlights the growing global influence of African alternative sounds.
Obama’s yearly favourite songs list has become a global talking point, often shining a spotlight on African music. In previous years, Nigerian artistes such as Tems, Rema, Ayra Starr and Burna Boy have all earned spots on the influential playlist.
The 2025 edition also features international heavyweights including Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Drake, Lady Gaga, BLACKPINK and Olivia Dean, reflecting a wide range of genres and global sounds.
For Nigerian artistes, landing on Obama’s playlist once again reinforces Afrobeats’ growing cultural impact and its continued crossover into mainstream global conversations.
