I'm a Singer, Not Gospel Artist — Shola Allyson Speaks on Faith, Music Identity and Creative Conviction

Popular Nigerian singer Sola Allyson has opened up about the philosophy guiding her music, revealing why she avoids mentioning the name “Jesus” in her songs and why she refuses to be boxed into the “gospel artiste” category.

In a heartfelt interview on Oyinmomo TV, posted on YouTube on Friday, the Eji Owuro crooner spoke about her creative journey, her understanding of faith, and the conviction behind her widely celebrated sound.

Allyson, whose music has long been described by fans as deeply spiritual and emotionally grounding, said people often assume she is a gospel artiste simply because her songs carry strong messages. But she insists the assumption is wrong.

Speaking in a blend of English and Yoruba, she said:

“I don’t sing religious songs. As I am like this, I don’t call myself a gospel artiste. My name is Sola Allyson. I am a singer.”

She explained that her music flows from a place of personal conviction, not from doctrines or pressure to fit into a religious label. According to her, the power in her songs comes from authenticity, not from adopting a “gospel” identity for acceptance or branding.

Addressing why she does not explicitly mention Jesus in her songs, Allyson said it is a deliberate choice rooted in how she understands faith and worship.

“Jesus didn’t say we should be mentioning His name,” she emphasized. “He didn’t say we should use His name for PR.”

She noted that many artistes use religious language as a strategy to attract attention, but she prefers a more sincere approach that aligns with her personal relationship with God.

Allyson added that the spiritual tone in her music is simply a reflection of who she is, not an attempt to conform to religious expectations. For her, artistry is about truth, depth, and purpose, not labels.

Her comments have sparked conversation online, with many Nigerians weighing in on whether gospel artistes must explicitly name Jesus in their songs or whether spirituality can be expressed in broader ways.

Regardless of the debates, Sola Allyson’s stance remains clear: she is not a gospel artiste, she is simply a singer who creates from the heart.
