Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar, Burna Boy, has once again set social media abuzz after declaring that the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti is the only African artist greater than him.
The ‘Last Last’ crooner made the claim during a recent livestream session with Australian streamer PlayboyMax, confidently stating:
“He’s King bro, you get me. He’s the only one greater than me.”
The host, visibly amused, responded, “I like that”, while laughing.
Burna Boy’s statement has since sparked mixed reactions across social media, with some fans applauding his confidence and others describing it as “audacious.”
While many agree that Burna Boy’s global impact is undeniable, others argue that Africa’s music legacy is far too deep to be narrowed down to such a comparison.
One user, @tochi_lifestyle, commented, “You’re who you think you are.” Another, @3.6.5.2.4.7.c.e, wrote, “True and respectfully to Fela.” @dboi_ikechukwu added, “Burna’s got creativity more than anybody in the Afro game.”

Regardless of the debate, Burna Boy remains one of Africa’s most successful and influential acts of the modern era, a position many believe even Fela Kuti himself would have admired.
