You’re a Failure, If Your Kids Can’t Speak Igbo – Yul Edochie Blasts Igbo Parents

Controversial Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has stirred fresh reactions online after calling out his fellow Igbos for failing to teach their children the Igbo language.

Taking to his official Instagram page, the son of veteran Pete Edochie lamented the growing neglect of the mother tongue among young Igbos.

“Today, many of us who are Igbos, our children cannot speak Igbo. It’s a failure on our part that must be corrected moving forward”, Yul wrote.

The self-acclaimed “King of Headlines” stressed that many African parents prioritize English as the first language at home while neglecting their native tongue.

But as expected,Yul Edochie’s post split opinions. While some agreed, others came hard at him, citing his own personal life controversies.

Instagram user @mercyokorie567 blasted him:

“Teaching our children Igbo language is not the only way to show that we are responsible parents. You can still teach them Igbo and fail in another aspect of parenting just you failed. You should be the last person to advise anyone about how to raise a child, Yul.”

Another critic, @gideonisime, dismissed his point:

“What’s the gain in speaking Igbo? Is it the gateway to heaven?”

However, not all reactions were negative. @mbaesomchi praised his words, saying:

“Isimili, you’re speaking fact.”

Some mocked him with sarcasm. @valentino_khrist wrote:

“Una still follow cause am. If to say I come make you give me job, you go say I no dey fluent in English despite being fluent in Igbo 😂.”

@ugegbe.official, however, supported Yul with a personal testimony:

“I’ve actually corrected mine, had to enroll them in a good public secondary school in Anambra, now they can speak Igbo very well.”

As the reactions pile up, one thing remains clear: the question of preserving the Igbo language is far from settled.
