Veteran Nigerian musician and activist, Zaaki Azzay, has strongly condemned the ongoing spate of violent attacks and killings in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria, describing the situation as “nothing short of ethnic cleansing and genocide.”
In a statement released on Monday, Zaaki Azzay expressed shock and outrage over the continued loss of innocent lives and the displacement of communities.
“I am compelled to express my utmost shock and dismay at the unprovoked attacks and violent killings in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria,” the singer stated.
“The barbaric manner in which innocent lives are being lost, people maimed, and women raped, with families displaced from their ancestral lands, is nothing short of ethnic cleansing and genocide, driven by a land grabbing agenda.”
As a native of Benue State, Zaaki called for unity among the state’s citizens and urged them to put aside political differences in the face of the crisis.
“As a son of Benue State, I urge all sons and daughters of Benue, both at home and in the diaspora, to put aside their political differences and join hands with Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia to bring an end to these senseless killings,” he said.
He further appealed to the nation’s security agencies to intensify efforts in combating the violence and to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
“I also call on the security agencies to redouble their efforts in combating this menace, ensuring that those responsible for these atrocities are brought to justice,” Zaaki said.
Offering condolences to the victims and those displaced by the attacks, the musician expressed hope for peace to return to the affected communities.
“My heart goes out to the families of the victims, those displaced, and those living in IDP camps. I pray that peace returns to the affected areas, and that the people can soon live without fear of attack and continue with their farming activities,” he stated.
Zaaki also urged Nigerians to stand in solidarity against injustice and violence.
“As a TRUE NIGERIAN, I believe that it is imperative for us to stand together against injustice and brutality. I urge everyone to support the efforts of the government and security agencies in addressing this crisis,” he said.
Concluding his statement with a call for collective action, Zaaki said: “Together, we can bring peace and security to Benue State. Let us join forces to condemn these attacks, support the victims, and work towards a future where our people can live in PEACE.”
