South Africans love me – Nwabali

Despite receiving threats from some South Africans, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has stated that he is popular throughout the country.

Nwabali, 27, currently plays for Chippa United in South Africa. His heroics between the sticks for Nigeria at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire have increased his stock.

Nwabali demonstrated his abilities during Wednesday night’s semi-final match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, making crucial saves during regulation time and stopping two penalties in the shootout.

Following Nigeria’s victory over South Africa, former Nigeria international Idah Peterside said some South Africans warned Nwabali not to return to the country.

“The biggest problem we have had is that we have gotten some messages where people have sent messages to the goalkeeper threatening him,” Peterside said on Channels Television on Thursday.

“I hear some people are telling him not to come back to South Africa since you didn’t want us to score. We have not heard of any violence. but just threats. They have been threatening him and threatening some people.”

But Chippa United, recognising his talent and dedication, expressed their support for the shot-stopper.

Nwabali said in a post on X on Friday that there is no love lost.

“This is a game I’m born to play. A night to remember!!! I felt every bit of it!!! Brick by brick and dreams are coming true. No love lost at all. I still love South Africa as much as their fans loves me and I love this team with all my heart,” he wrote.
