Burna Boy beats Tems, Black Sherif, others to win best African act at MTV Awards
Burna Boy, a Grammy Award-winning singer, recently took home the title of “Best African Act” at the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards, which were held in Germany.
In the same category as Burna Boy were Ayra Starr, Black Sherif, Tems, Zuchu, and Musa Keyz.
The award ceremony, which took place on Sunday night at the PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf, Germany, was dominated by pop star Taylor Swift.
The US singer won four prizes for her song “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version),” including “best artist,” “best video,” “best pop,” and “best long-form video.”
For “Super Freaky Girl,” Nicki Minaj also received awards for “best song” and “best hip-hop,” while Harry Styles triumphed in the “best live” category.
The South Korean boy band Seventeen defeated Tems to win the title of “best new artiste.”
In August 2022, Burna Boy became the first African artiste to sell out the State Farm Arena, beating his colleagues Wizkid, Davido and Tiwa Savage.
He is also the only African artiste to have sold out four Arenas in the US. They include; the 17 thousand-capacity Hollywood bowl, the Toyota center, with a capacity of 19 thousand, the 21 thousand Madison Square Garden, and the 21 thousand-capacity State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
The 31-year-old also made history as the first African to sell out the Ziggi Dome in Amsterdam, Netherlands during his concert Burna Boy Space Drift tour.
