At the funeral service for Queen Elizabeth on Monday in London, the center of attention was a group of Nigerian women from the diaspora wearing aso ebi.

Aso ebi is a crucial component of Yoruba celebration culture. In Nigeria, it has expanded to become widely accepted.

Dayo Olomu, a Nigerian community leader with British parents who lives in London, posed with some women wearing aso ebi.

He shared a picture of them on Facebook along with the caption:

“Nigerian ladies honouring the Queen in their beautiful African aso ebi attires.

“These my sisters were the cynosure of all eyes at the funeral service of Her Majesty at Hyde Park Corner.”

At the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8 in Balmoral, Scotland. She ruled for more than seven decades, making her Britain’s monarch with the longest reign.

For her funeral, a large number of world leaders gathered in London. US President Joe Biden was the only one permitted to enter Buckingham Palace in his motorcade known as The Beast, while all other world leaders were transported there in buses.

Yemi Osinbajo, vice president of Nigeria, attended the funeral while wearing a black agbada. He posed for pictures alongside some African leaders as well as Boris Johnson, a former British prime minister.
