Nollywood star Deyemi Okanlawon has opened up about his bold decision to walk away from acting in 2019, citing frustration with poor pay and unfulfilling projects as the key reasons he returned to corporate life before making a triumphant comeback.

The talented actor shared his story during a recent episode of the CreativiTea podcast, which has since gone viral and sparked fresh conversations about the challenges facing artistes in the Nigerian film industry.

“I quit acting in 2019, brushed up my resume, and got a job. I went to Silverbird Film Distribution as head of marketing. I was promoted to head the Nollywood distribution desk and eventually became the acting CEO when the CEO at the time relocated during COVID. I was there for 2 years,” he revealed.

Deyemi explained that the decision was driven by deep dissatisfaction.

“I quit acting because the pay was nonsense. The work was nonsense. And I just felt like I didn’t leave 9-5 to come and do mediocre work. So, it was difficult to wake up in the morning and go to work. And what’s the point of being passionate about something and then not being fulfilled by it? So, I quit, and I went back to a 9-5 job,” he said.

The actor’s honest confession highlights a struggle in Nollywood where passion often collides with financial realities and creative frustrations. Many talented performers face similar dilemmas, balancing the glamour of the screen with the need for stable income and meaningful work.

After two years in corporate roles, Deyemi returned to acting in 2021 with renewed clarity and a deeper understanding of the industry. The move has since helped position him among the top talents in Nollywood, proving that stepping away can sometimes fuel a stronger comeback.

His story resonates with aspiring actors and established stars alike, underscoring the importance of fulfilment alongside financial reward. As the podcast clip continues to trend, many are praising Deyemi for his transparency and using the moment to call for better pay structures and higher production standards in the industry.

Deyemi Okanlawon’s journey from frustration to renewed success serves as both inspiration and a wake-up call for Nollywood to value its talents better.
