Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about his early hustle days and the moment he first met music mogul Don Jazzy, describing the encounter as unforgettable and deeply inspiring.
In a resurfaced video clip now making the rounds on social media, the singer reflected on his teenage years in music and the role Don Jazzy played in motivating him at the start of his career.
“I remember the first day I saw Don Jazzy, I thought I was looking at Jesus,” Davido said. “But yeah, it was amazing.”
The clip, originally shared by entertainment executive Dami Adenuga in April 2025, shows Davido speaking candidly about how he broke into the industry at a young age and learned to rely on his skills before fame found him.
“I blew up when I was 17. I was a baby, but I released Dami Duro in October. Yeah, I turned 19 that December,” he said. “I was seventeen when I did Back When.”
Davido explained that his journey began with self-belief and hard work, long before the spotlight.
“I just picked up my laptop and started going everywhere, showing people that my main strong point was that I knew how to engineer. I know how to make beats,” he said.
According to the singer, a cousin he identified as Special introduced him to the then Mo’Hits crew, the iconic group co-founded by Don Jazzy and D’banj.
“One of my cousins, Special, he used to work with Mo’Hits, with D’banj. I just entered, and they liked me so much,” Davido recalled. “I was young and just chilling. And I knew work, Don Jazzy was my mentor.”
He added that meeting Don Jazzy pushed him further into the grind.
“From there, I just started hustling. Started meeting people,” he said.
The video has reignited conversations around mentorship in Nigerian music, with many fans noting how Don Jazzy’s influence has shaped several stars across generations.
Davido, who later went on to build his own label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), and achieve global success, said his story is a reminder that every big journey starts with learning, hustle, and the right inspiration.
