Actress Angela Okorie Remains Detained After Bail Granted

Despite meeting the bail conditions set by a Federal High Court in Abuja, Nollywood actress Angela Okorie remains in custody at the Suleja Correctional Facility, sparking confusion and controversy across social media.

Last Friday, the court granted Okorie bail in the sum of ₦5 million with one surety of equal amount, a Level 13 civil servant, after she was arraigned on charges relating to alleged cybercrime and defamation. The surety was required to provide an affidavit of means, appointment letter, letter of last promotion, and other supporting documents, all of which were reportedly completed.

However, human rights activist Stanley Ontop took to Instagram to update the public on her ongoing detention, offering an explanation for the delay in her release.

In his post, he wrote:

“Angela Okorie’s bail application has been processed, but after we finished the processing, time had already gone.”

According to Ontop, the actress’s bail was secured with the support of several activists and public figures, including Omoyele Sowore, Mama Pee, and Randy Peter.

Despite fulfilling the court’s requirements, Okorie was not released on Friday, prompting strong reactions online.

Ontop reassured supporters, promising that the actress would be freed soon:

“We have met all her bail conditions. She will be out of Suleja prison by Monday.”

Many Nigerians on social media expressed confusion and frustration over why Okorie had not been released immediately after meeting her bail terms. Some users demanded more transparency from authorities, while others applauded the activists and celebrities who intervened on her behalf.

The delay, according to Ontop’s update, was due to the bail process being completed late on Friday, with the expectation that the release procedures would resume on Monday.

As of press time, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police Force or the Federal High Court regarding the delay in Okorie’s release.
