A-Q Escapes Death: “Ten Masked Men Swung Machetes at My Head!”

Nigerian rapper Gilbert Bani, popularly known as A-Q, has detailed a terrifying attack he endured while walking in East Legon, Accra, on the night of Saturday, 17 October 2026. In a personal statement released on Thursday, 22 October, the artist described how the incident unfolded and shared his current condition while urging restraint from the public.

A-Q recounted the moments of the assault with clarity.

“On Saturday, 17 October, at around 10pm, I was attacked while out on a walk in East Legon, Accra,” he began. “About ten masked men on five motorcycles surrounded me. The riders tried to box me into a corner while the men on the back swung machetes at me. My elbow took a blow that was meant for my head. I managed to break away and run across the road, where a good Samaritan picked me up and rushed me to Lister Hospital at Airport Hills Blvd. I was taken straight into surgery and my injuries were treated.”

He confirmed that the matter is now with the authorities.

“The attack has been reported to the Ghana Police Service and is being investigated. I am now in a safe place while the police work to establish who was behind it and why,” A-Q stated.

The rapper took time to express gratitude to those who helped him that night.

“To the stranger who stopped for me that night, and to the doctors and nurses who cared for me: thank you,” he wrote.

Turning to his supporters, he offered reassurance and a clear request.

“To my friends, fans and well-wishers: please don’t worry, I am well by God’s grace. I ask that you don’t speculate about who was responsible or direct anger at anyone. Let the police do their work, and if you have any information, please share it with them.”

A-Q, born Gilbert Bani on 1 August 1986 in Abia State and raised in Surulere, Lagos, is a respected figure in Nigerian hip-hop known for his lyricism, freestyles and work under his Hustle Inc label. His decision to publicly share the details of the attack while calling for calm has drawn attention from fans and the wider entertainment community as the Ghana Police Service continues its investigation.
