A Nigerian woman who accused Singapore-based footballer Victor Ebele Jr. of rape in 2025 has withdrawn the allegation and apologised to him, his family and the police.
Chioma Oniniwu, also identified in reports as Chiomie, first went on X last year to allege that Ebele raped her and impregnated her. She also accused members of his family, including his mother and sister, of harassing her, and dragged his brother, professional footballer Frank Ebele, into the dispute. She further claimed police officers bullied her when she tried to report the matter.
On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Oniniwu was arrested, charged to court and remanded before she was later granted bail. Days later, on Saturday, August 29, about 11 months after the original post, she returned online to take the accusation back.
“Victor Jr Ebele did not rape me, I was going through a difficult time and so frightened I took laws into my hands and wrongly accused him. I recognize how this has affected not just him but his family and I am deeply sorry,” she wrote, tagging the FCT Police.
In a longer open letter, she said she was pregnant, overwhelmed by fear and afraid of facing the pregnancy alone.
“I acknowledge that my actions and statements caused pain, distress, embarrassment, and damage to Victor’s reputation and to the peace of the entire Ebele family. For this, I am truly sorry.”
She also apologised to Frank Ebele and the rest of the family for pulling them into a public fight.
“I deeply regret accusing Victor of rape and the consequences that followed from that accusation. I am also sincerely sorry for defaming his character.”
Oniniwu directed part of the letter to the Nigeria Police Force.
“I would also like to sincerely apologise to the Nigerian Police Force for the disrespect, disruption, and unnecessary burden that my actions may have caused.”
She said she now takes full responsibility.
“I cannot change what happened, but I can acknowledge the wrong I did, express genuine remorse, and make every effort going forward to conduct myself with greater honesty, responsibility, and respect for everyone involved.”
In a video apology, she asked blogs and social media users to stop linking Ebele to the old claim and to take down earlier posts. As of publication, there was no public response from Victor Ebele or his family attached to the two source reports.
