Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has ignited fresh controversy with a scathing attack on polygamy, declaring it a destructive marital practice that breeds rivalry, jealousy, and endless family conflicts, using the ongoing public disputes in the late Mr Ibu’s family as a painful example.
In a strongly worded post, the veteran actress expressed deep regret over polygamous structures, stating they threaten peace and harmony in African homes.
“Polygamy has done more harm than good, not just in Nigeria but in Africa as a whole. We must call a spade a spade. Late Mr Ibu did not do well at all!!!!!!! No matter how we try to sugarcoat polygamy or paint it as a cultural success story, it still does not change the fact that it has been one of the greatest marital errors that has jeopardized the peace, unity, and harmony of countless families,” Rita Edochie wrote.
She highlighted the common problems associated with the practice:
“Rivalry. Jealousy, unhealthy competition, bitterness, divided loyalties, inheritance disputes, and prolonged family conflicts have become familiar stories in many polygamous homes.”
The actress pointed directly to the public disagreements among members of the late comic actor John Okafor (Mr Ibu)’s family over property and other issues as a heartbreaking reminder.
“The situation currently playing out in Mr Ibu’s family has become another painful reminder of how difficult such family structures can become… This should serve as a serious warning to those who are currently in polygamous homes or are planning to build one tomorrow,” she warned.
Rita Edochie contrasted polygamy with the ideals of marriage, noting that even monogamy requires significant effort.
“Marriage was designed to be a union built on love, commitment, trust, sacrifice, and mutual understanding. Even monogamy, involving just one man and one wife, is challenging enough to sustain in today’s world,” she added.
The statement comes amid ongoing public family drama involving the late Mr Ibu’s relatives, further amplifying discussions about inheritance, loyalty, and the long-term consequences of polygamous marriages in Nigeria.
