“Government Is Not Incompetent!” — May Edochie on Kidnapping Crisis

Nollywood actress May Edochie has waded into the raging national conversation on insecurity, declaring that she does not believe the Nigerian government is incompetent in tackling kidnapping and banditry. Her statement has triggered mixed reactions amid the ongoing pain of affected families.

In a detailed Instagram post, the mother and actress acknowledged the devastating impact of insecurity while expressing confidence in the government’s capacity to end the crisis.

“I strongly do not believe the Nigerian government is incompetent in dealing with kidnapping and banditry. The government is aware of the problem and has the capacity to address it effectively. The question remains: Why must innocent citizens continue to suffer the devastating consequences of insecurity?”

May highlighted Nigeria’s past successes in managing major health crises as proof of what is possible with urgency and coordination.

“Nigeria demonstrated remarkable capacity during the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences showed that when there is urgency, coordination, and commitment, Nigeria can respond effectively to major national crises.”

She urged decisive action:

“This is a call on the government to apply the same level of determination, coordination, and strategic action to the fight against kidnapping, bandits, and insecurity. Nigeria has the intelligence and capability to stop banditry, kidnapping, and insecurity. We need the government to do the needful.”

Her comments come at a time when many celebrities have voiced stronger frustration and direct criticism over the rising cases of school abductions and banditry terrorising communities across the country.

The actress stressed that families live in constant fear, loved ones are abducted, communities are traumatised, and even Nigerians in the diaspora are scared of returning home.
