Funke Akindele Heartbroken! Begs Nigerians to Save Special-Needs Children

Nollywood superstar and filmmaker Funke Akindele has made an emotional appeal to Nigerians for urgent support for 32 children with special needs who were displaced following a court-ordered eviction from their therapy centre in Yaba, Lagos.

The actress took to her Instagram page on Monday after watching a distressing video of the children and their belongings left outside Magnificient Therapy Services, the facility that had cared for them for 16 years. The centre, which began in 2010 with just two children in a modest two-bedroom apartment, had grown to provide essential therapy and support for kids living with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, dyslexia, and other developmental conditions.

Funke Akindele said:

“This video was sent to me today, and honestly, it broke my heart. Seeing children living with autism, dyslexia, cerebral palsy and other special needs displaced and lying outside with their belongings is deeply upsetting.”

She clarified that her intervention was not about taking sides in the tenancy dispute but about showing compassion for the vulnerable children.

“This post is not to discredit or attack anyone involved. I simply want to use my platform to encourage support for these children during this difficult time. I have contributed in my own little way, and I’m appealing to anyone who can help in any way possible. No child deserves to be left helpless.”

Following the eviction, some parents quickly took their children home, but others — including orphans and those without immediate guardians — were temporarily moved to an uncompleted building, with kind neighbours providing short-term shelter.

Funke Akindele ended her plea with a call for help on behalf of the children.

“Please, whatever support you can give will go a long way. If you’re able to do more, kindly help them. Let’s show these children love, kindness, and humanity.”

Her timely intervention has drawn attention to the plight of special-needs children who often face societal exclusion, highlighting the importance of protecting care facilities that serve as safe havens for them. Many fans and well-meaning Nigerians have responded positively to her call, praising the actress for using her influence to champion a worthy cause.
