How Stereotypes Affected My Acting Journey — Bolaji Ogunmola

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola has opened up about the tough typecasting she endured in her early acting years, revealing how industry biases around skin tone and body shape nearly confined her to limited roles.

The talented star, known for her versatility both in front of and behind the camera, shared her experiences during a candid interview with media personality JayOnAir. She described being repeatedly boxed into specific character types due to her dark skin and curvy figure at a time when lighter-skinned actresses dominated lead roles.

“It was almost like they wanted to put me in a box. I am dark-skinned. There was a time when light-skinned people were reigning, and they told me I was very curvy and tried to limit me to ‘side chick’ roles. That went on for a while, and I didn’t like it.”

Despite the frustrating stereotyping, the actress who participated in the Next Movie Star reality show maintained her drive. “My journey has been crazy, but I have just kept at it,” she added, highlighting her commitment to pushing through the challenges.

Bolaji Ogunmola did not rely solely on acting income during those formative years. She started a side business early, driven by her aversion to traditional 9-to-5 jobs and a desire for financial independence.

“I just wanted my life to have meaning at that time. I am not somebody who likes to sit at home; I wanted to do something. I never wanted to do 9–5… I am business-savvy like that.”

The actress emphasised the importance of planning ahead in the unpredictable entertainment industry. She advised fellow creatives to diversify their income streams, noting that fame can be fleeting.

“Life is in phases. You are popular today, you may not be tomorrow. What are you doing to put food on the table? You should be investing, positioning yourself from now.”

She credited filmmaker Biodun Stephen as a major influence on her growth as a producer.

“Before you lead, serve. A lot of the things I learnt were from other producers. Biodun Stephen was my first teacher when it comes to movie production. Every time I am on set, I am watching her.”

Bolaji Ogunmola’s story reflects the broader struggles many actresses face in an industry still grappling with beauty standards and role distribution. Her determination to break free from those early limitations has seen her evolve into a multifaceted talent who now creates her own opportunities through filmmaking.
