The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) kicked off in grand style on Friday, May 8, 2026, with its highly anticipated Cultural Day celebration at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. Celebrities turned up in stunning traditional attire, proudly showcasing Africa’s rich fashion heritage and creativity.
The event, themed “Honouring Craft, Celebrating Culture,” highlighted African storytelling through fashion and entertainment. Attendees dazzled in elaborate outfits that reflected diverse cultural influences across the continent.
Among the stars who lit up the occasion were Natacha Akide (Tacha), Omowunmi Dada, Nnenna Mbonu, Uche Jombo, Scarlet Gomez, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Jason Jae, Imisioluwa Ayanwale, Iyo Prosper, and Ashiogwu Precious. Veteran actress Joke Silva was announced as the Head Judge for this year’s awards, taking over from filmmaker Femi Odugbemi. The 2026 edition features 32 categories, including two new ones: Best Indigenous Language Film for North Africa and Best Indigenous Language Film for Central Africa, aimed at broadening pan-African representation.
Top nominated films this year include Gingerrr, The Herd, My Father’s Shadow, 3 Cold Dishes, and The Serpent’s Gift. The main awards ceremony is scheduled for tonight, Saturday, May 9, 2026.
