Nigerian Afrobeats artist Crayon has found himself at the center of a viral controversy after a casual Snapchat update spiraled into a controversial moment in the Nigerian music industry. What began as a routine fan interaction quickly became a culture war between the rising star’s supporters and the loyal 30BG fanbase of music heavyweight Davido.
Crayon, born Charles Chibueze Chukwu and formerly signed to Don Jazzy’s powerhouse Mavin Records, took to Snapchat to respond to a fan asking about the timeline for his next release. Appearing in a short video with a noticeably hoarse voice, he offered a reassuring update before throwing in a line that stopped the internet in its tracks.
“It’s coming soon,”
he said, before adding:
“My voice don Davido, Backy don back my voice.”
The second half of that statement was the spark. Many listeners interpreted it as a deliberate jab at Davido’s well-known raspy vocal tone, a texture that has become one of his most recognizable sonic signatures. The fact that Crayon’s own voice happened to sound unusually rough in the clip gave the remark an extra layer of irony, turning an otherwise forgettable update into a carefully timed, if ambiguous, cultural moment.
The clip spread rapidly across social media, where it was dissected, memed, and debated with the kind of energy Nigerian music Twitter reserves for its most heated conversations. Davido’s 30BG community hit back hard, flooding comment sections and timelines with pointed remarks and calling Crayon’s statement the height of disrespect toward a man widely regarded as one of the most influential architects of contemporary Afrobeats.
Many questioned the logic of a newer artist taking a swipe, even a veiled one, at someone of Davido’s commercial stature and cultural legacy. Crayon’s supporters, on the other hand, largely framed the comment as harmless wordplay, arguing the line could just as easily be read as a lighthearted observation rather than a calculated diss.
