Nollywood actor Tobi Makinde has finally addressed swirling online rumours of a rift with industry heavyweight Funke Akindele, insisting that nothing is wrong between them and that their bond remains intact. In a calm and measured BBC interview, the actor described social media as quick to invent stories and cast people into roles that suit its narrative.
Makinde was direct about the speculation.
“Nothing happened between I and madam Funke and I’m not aware of any fallout.”
He stressed that their connection runs deeper than public platforms.
“My relationship with Funke Akindele didn’t start on social media and it won’t end on social media.”
The actor explained that personal and professional growth can sometimes create distance without breaking ties.
“There are certain growths you’ll experience that’ll make certain relationships feel like they were lost along the way but not necessarily.”
Makinde gave context to their long-standing professional bond, tracing his own journey in the industry back to 1998 when he was just seven years old. His father, actor Jimi Makinde, introduced him to legendary producer Tunji Bamishigbin, leading to his debut in the film Silenced. He listed Funke Akindele as one of the major figures who shaped his career alongside his father and Bamishigbin.
“There’s no way to write my story without writing about my father, Jimi Makinde, or Mr Tunji Bamishigbin, or Mrs Funke Akindele. Those were the key players to my brand and career as a Nollywood actor.”
He also addressed why she could not attend his wedding, noting her demanding schedule.
“When I was doing my wedding was when she was promoting her movie so she was very busy and we all know she’s always busy with the way she takes her craft seriously so it’s very understandable.”
The interview has drawn supportive reactions online, with many praising the actor for keeping the matter private and refusing to let gossip define his relationships. Fans highlighted his maturity in focusing on growth rather than drama, while others appreciated the reminder that not every lull in public appearances signals a feud.
Funke Akindele, a multiple award-winning actress and producer, remains a dominant force in the industry known for her work ethic and box-office successes. Their collaboration over the years has contributed to several notable projects, making any talk of tension particularly newsworthy.
Makinde’s statement appears to be aimed at closing the chapter on speculation once and for all. His message is that their relationship is intact, their history is respected, and the industry continues to move forward.
