TikTok sensation Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, has found himself at the centre of a major cultural controversy after gaining unauthorised access to the sacred precincts of the Oba of Benin palace during his nationwide tour. The Benin Traditional Council has described the March 6, 2026 incident as a “serious breach of protocol and desecration of the sacred precincts,” issuing a stern warning that could lead to the expulsion of a palace queen and disciplinary action against other officials.
The council, in a statement released shortly after the visit, confirmed that Peller and his entourage entered the palace without the required permission from the Benin Traditional Council. Frank Irabor, Secretary of the council, addressed the public directly, stating:
“The Benin Traditional Council wishes to address the public regarding a serious breach of protocol and desecration of the sacred precincts of the Palace, which occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026.”
He added that,
“the palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin, governed by centuries of tradition, custom, and sacred protocols.”
According to the council, a queen of the palace who facilitated the visit is now facing serious disciplinary proceedings. In line with Benin traditions and customs, these proceedings “may result in her removal from the palace.” A staff member identified as Mr Omuemu has already been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for causing a breach of the peace and abetting the unauthorised entry. Additionally, a chief implicated in the incident has been suspended indefinitely.
The council has demanded that Peller present himself immediately before the relevant authorities and tender an unreserved written apology. Irabor warned:
“Failure to comply with this directive will leave the council with no option but to pursue legal action.”
Peller, a content creator known for his engaging social media presence, has not publicly responded to the council’s statement as of the latest reports. The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with many highlighting the importance of respecting traditional institutions in Nigeria, while others question how such access was granted in the first place.
The Benin Traditional Council has reiterated its role as the unwavering custodian of the kingdom’s age-old customs, assuring the public that it possesses the institutional tools to address such infractions firmly.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on whether Peller will comply with the council’s directive and how the disciplinary measures against the queen and officials will be resolved.
