Media personality Daddy Freeze has weighed into the ongoing debate comparing Afrobeats star Wizkid to the late Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, saying the two should not be placed on the same scale.
Daddy Freeze made his position known amid the heated exchange between Wizkid and Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, which began after Seun criticised Wizkid’s fans for repeatedly calling the singer a “modern-day Fela.”
While Wizkid fired back at Seun Kuti during the online spat, claiming superiority over the Afrobeat legend, Daddy Freeze argued that such comparisons ignore the depth of Fela’s legacy.
According to him, Fela’s impact went far beyond music, as the late singer used his voice and body to confront political oppression at great personal cost.
“Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and carry stones to Government House, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela,” Daddy Freeze said.
He explained that Fela’s life was defined by activism, sacrifice, and direct confrontation with power, not just hit records or fame.
“Fela put his skin in the game. Fela wasn’t a troublemaker; he was a freedom fighter,” he added.
Daddy Freeze stressed that Fela endured arrests, jail time, and physical attacks because he challenged authority through his music and actions.
“Agitation and music go together; you can’t separate the two. Fela went to jail fighting for our right,” he said.
The media personality noted that while Wizkid’s global success and influence are undeniable, comparing it to Fela’s political resistance and historical impact misses the point.
According to him, Fela’s legacy was built on courage, activism, and a willingness to risk everything for what he believed in; elements he says define greatness beyond charts, streams, or awards.
