Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has called out the Nigerian government following the fatal road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
Entertainment Reporter earlier reported that Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, around the Makun area of Ogun State. The boxer was travelling in a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck.
While Joshua sustained minor injuries, two occupants of the vehicle sadly lost their lives at the scene, sparking outrage and grief across the country.
Reacting to the incident via his Instagram page, AY expressed deep sorrow and frustration, describing the tragedy as a painful reflection of how human lives are treated in Nigeria.
“Today is a painful reminder of how cheaply lives are treated in Nigeria,” AY wrote.
The comedian lamented that a Nigerian who has carried the country’s flag proudly across the world could return home only for tragedy to strike due to poor road conditions and systemic failures.
“It is devastating that a Nigerian who has carried our flag with pride across the world can return home only for two of his closest associates to be met by death on our roads,” he said.
AY stressed that the incident was not a matter of fate but a clear failure of leadership, infrastructure, and road safety systems.
“Two precious lives gone. Friends. Brothers. People with families, dreams, and futures. This is not fate. This is failure,” he added.
He went on to question how many more lives must be lost before meaningful action is taken.
“Failure of our road safety systems. Failure of infrastructure. Failure of leadership. How many more must die before our roads are made safe?”
Calling for accountability, AY stated that a nation that cannot protect its people urgently needs reform.
“A country that cannot protect its people is a country in urgent need of accountability. We need safer roads, proper enforcement, effective emergency response systems, and a government that treats human life as sacred, not disposable.”
The entertainer concluded by expressing sympathy for Anthony Joshua and the families of the deceased.
“My heart is heavy for Anthony Joshua. My prayers are with the families of the departed and with everyone grieving this senseless loss. Nigeria must do better. Lives depend on it.”
The emotional post has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians echoing AY’s call for urgent road safety reforms.
